Subject: MACHINE SHOP CLEANING
Hello again:
We are looking for alternatives for cleaning metalic parts after machining operations. Presently, we are degreasing with Genesolve 2004 from Alied Signal. As you all know, Genesolve, along with all other CFC's and HCFC's, is going away in December.
We would like to here from people who have experience in using either an alternative solvent or water for cleaning their machined parts.
Thanks,
Jim Marsico

ISP (1-800-622-4423) offers solvent metal cleaners based on NMP that work very well. They rinse off with water or IPA. Talk with the folks at ISP about your particular application. Environmental Solvents Corp. (904-724-1990) is offering inexpensive pneumatic cleaning systems (about $10K) for solvent wash/IPA rinse. They also offer kits so you can retrofit your vapor degreaser to use solvent wash/IPA rinse ($2-4K). Some folks are buying a small vacuum still so they can recycle solvents. If you work with IPA, you will have to follow procedures for flammable liquids.
For our small proto-type machine shop, we are cleaning mostly aluminum with an aqueous based cleaner from W. R. Grace (510-568-3427) called Daraclean 282. The equipment we use is a relatively inexpensive glove box spray parts washer from ADF (about $5K). 515-332-5400 This process is O.K. but requires water rinse and drying. The cleaner/water mix needs monitoring and frequent adjustments. The operators are reluctant to use the process for some steels.
